One Firm, For Life
Newport News attorney Barb Hanna is a partner with Riddle & Hanna, PLC. Barb devotes her practice to representing clients in legal battles ranging from family matters to military and veteran issues to immigration concerns.
Barb brings each of her clients the benefits of years of experience as a trial attorney and Navy judge advocate. She has a particularly extensive background in complex family law cases as well as military and administrative law, including security clearance matters. She has been in private legal practice in Newport News since 2012, where she practiced with the law firm Cowardin, Kim & Riddle before co-founding Riddle & Hanna.
A fierce advocate and creative problem solver, Barb approaches every case as a fresh challenge. Clients and peers alike note her keen ability to work through complex, and often emotionally charged, situations to achieve practical solutions to meet client goals.
Barb began her legal career as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Navy, practicing law on active duty with the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps. She handled Federal Tort Claims, represented hundreds of Sailors in administrative and criminal proceedings, trained senior leaders in military law, and advised top Navy officials on complex administrative law issues. After nearly a decade on active duty, Barb shifted gears to focus on raising her family while practicing law as a reserve officer in the Navy JAG Corps.
A Delaware native, Barb was raised in Newark, where she graduated from Christiana High School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Delaware. While a college student, Barb had the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark, sparking a life-long passion for travel. Following her undergraduate studies, Barb attended Penn State Dickinson Law School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, earning her Juris Doctor in 1994. As a law student, she won the Penn State International Law Review writing competition and served as Editor in Chief of this publication. Recognized for excellence in oral and written advocacy, Barb was selected for the Association of Trial Lawyers of America Moot Court Team and the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Team, as well as named to the Order of Barristers.
In addition to practicing law, Barb enjoys spending quality time with her family, exploring the outdoors, and traveling.
